Enchanting: Amulets & Talismans

Basic enchanting isn't difficult for anyone to do, as long as you have realistic expectations. Remember, ultimately all magick is doing is nudging odds towards a particular outcome. So, you probably won't be able to enchant a ring for luck to the point where you hit the lotto every time you play, or an amulet for a shield that will protect you from bullets. You can, however, enchant a ring to help nudge the odds a little bit in your favor or an amulet that will help shield you from negative energy. The following will be a very basic overview of what amulets and talismans are, what you can do with them, and how to make them.

What are they?

By definition, a talisman attracts positive energy, and an amulet repels negative energy. So, talismans are used to enchant items to attract positive attributes like health, luck, wisdom, etc. They are also used to create a direct connection to entities like your guides, which we'll cover in more detail in a moment. Amulets are used for protection. They can be helpful for blocking out negative energy for extremely sensitive and/or empathic people. They can also help act as a shield against outside mental intrusion, which can be helpful for people just starting to become clairaudient but haven't learned to control it yet. It can get overwhelming to constantly hear thoughts that aren't yours but not being able to tell who or what it is or filter it out completely when you don't want to be open to listening.

How do you make them?

You can enchant anything for either purpose, be it a ring, watch, necklace, a rock you keep in your pocket- whatever works for you. Take the object that you want to enchant and hold it in your hands; or, if the object is larger, like a statue, just place your hands on it. Take a few moments to get into a meditative state where your mind is focused and ready. Once you feel ready, begin to gather energy. With each long breath in, picture energy filling you and with each breath out picture that energy flowing to your hands. Continue to do this until you feel it's enough, and then focus on your intent. Let's say you want to enchant a pendant and make it an amulet to shield negative energy. Focus on that intent in your mind. "A shield for negative energy." Repeat it to yourself over and over until the intention is firm, and then picture that energy and intention flowing from your hands into the object.

That's it.

You'll want to periodically "recharge" the item, especially when you're first starting out. As you advance in practice, you'll get to the point where you can set them up to basically constantly recharge themselves by drawing on energy directly from you. If you'd like to re-enchant the object with a different intention, first cleanse the object by burning a little sage and allowing the smoke to drift over it.

Connecting to Guides

This process works the same for establishing a link to your Guides (or gods, angels, etc.) Think of it like having a speed dial, or a Skype connection that's always up, but just on mute. Most people who have alters do this already, potentially without realizing it. The idols that we place on altars to represent a particular entity, as we invest energy into them while doing ritual offerings, are already establishing that connection. You can do the same with jewelry, or even tattoos. Pick something that represents the Guide or god that you're connecting to, and do the same process as you would creating a talisman. I currently wear a necklace that has pendants for several guides, and I've done the same with two tattoos.
