Why the Golden Rule is Universal

Just a quick thing to think about. It's probably pretty obvious to most, but I still think it's worth bringing up. Everyone has heard the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The quote is attributed to Jesus, but just about every religion has something similar. It makes sense, right? It seems like a pretty straightforward concept- treat others the way that you want to be treated. If everyone followed it, the world would be in a much less negative place. That's very true, but it's deeper than that. We are all one. We all have the same spark of the Source inside of us. We were all made of the same stuff. We'll all eventually reunite with the Source. When we die, during our life review we experience all the good and the bad that we made others feel. When you do something shitty to someone, you are literally doing it to yourself. It's so easy to become numb and desensitized now. We spend so much time online, engaging with anonymous names on a screen, that it can be very easy to forget that they are real people with real emotions. I've been trying to keep that in mind when I engage with people on social media, which can be difficult when people can be vocally opinionated dicks that you don't agree with. I have to stop and ask myself before I respond, "Is this really worth it?" I admittedly don't always take the high road; and while it may feel cathartic in the moment to take the piss out of a jackass online, I almost always end up regretting it later and feeling disappointed in myself. No real point of this post, other than it's something I've been thinking about more lately and thought I'd share.
